EMERALD RAIN PRODUCTIONS (ERP) is a homegrown, San Francisco Bay Area theatre company dedicated to producing original plays and specializing in pop/rock musicals. Founded in 1993 by Gaby Alter (Best Original Score, 1998, Bay Area Critic’s Circle) and Dominic Mah (Young Playwrights finalist, 1993), ERP has mounted thirteen original productions in venues such as San Francisco’s Cable Car Theater and Los Angeles’ Mark Taper Forum. ERP’s approach to musical theatre both co-opts and sidesteps the traditions of the American musical, creating an experience somewhere between a stage play and a concert, and incorporating genres such as funk, rock, electronica, and swing. ERP’s plays explore such topics as proms and teen pop idols (Itgirl, 2000), superheroes and self-image (Vapor Tales, 1998), apathy and the undead (Young Zombies In Love, 2001/2002/2004), globalization and alien invasion (Earth Verses, 1997), and paying the rent (Birthday Cake, 1999). ERP has released two soundtrack albums on CD. The New York International Fringe Festival is host to ERP’s east coast debut.
